Finding ways to increase student engagement in the classroom is one of the most common challenges in teaching biology. Over the years, I’ve experimented with various strategies to capture and maintain my students’ attention. Today, I’m excited to share a few of these tried-and-true ways to engage students that I have used in my own classroom.

Ways to Increase Student Engagement in the Classroom
ONE | Hands-On Experiments: The Magic of Direct Experience
There’s a unique kind of magic that happens when students get to see science in action. Hands-on experiments provide an immersive learning experience that textbooks just can’t match.

A simple plant growth experiment can be a game-changer. Have students plant seeds in different conditions—some with ample sunlight, some in the dark, some with more water, and some with less. Over a few weeks, students can record their observations, tracking which plants thrive and which don’t. This experiment not only teaches them about photosynthesis and plant biology but also introduces them to the scientific method in a tangible way.
TWO | Field Trips & Outdoor Learning: Nature as the Ultimate Classroom
The world outside our classroom walls is teeming with lessons waiting to be discovered. Field trips and outdoor learning experiences can breathe fresh life into your curriculum, making abstract concepts tangible.
A trip to a local botanical garden can be an eye-opener. Armed with notebooks and magnifying glasses, students can explore different plant species, learning about biodiversity, plant anatomy, and even medicinal properties of certain plants. Even a walk around the school grounds can be educational. From observing the behavior of ants to studying the structure of leaves, nature offers endless opportunities for inquiry and discovery.
THREE | Interactive Technology: Embracing the Digital Age
We live in a digital age, and today’s students are digital natives. Integrating technology into your lessons can make them more engaging and relatable.

Virtual dissections can be a great alternative to the real thing. They’re less messy, more ethical, and offer a unique perspective on anatomy. There are also augmented reality apps that bring the human body to life, allowing students to explore organs, tissues, and systems in 3D. These tools offer an immersive experience, making complex concepts easier to grasp.
FOUR | Collaborative Projects: The Power of Teamwork
Collaboration fosters creativity, communication, and critical thinking. When students work together on a project, they not only learn from the material but also from each other.

Encourage students to team up and research a topic they’re passionate about. It could be the impact of pollution on local ecosystems, the intricacies of the human circulatory system, or the evolution of amphibians. Once their research is complete, they can present their findings in various formats—posters, presentations, or even short videos. The process of collaborating, researching, and presenting hones a range of skills, from teamwork to public speaking.
Engaging students in the biology and anatomy classroom goes beyond delivering content. It’s about creating experiences, sparking curiosity, and fostering a love for learning. Whether you’re a seasoned educator or just starting out, I hope these strategies inspire you to try something new in your classroom. After all, every day is an opportunity for discovery—for both our students and ourselves.
