What is a Webquest?

A webquest is an online activity that engages students in their learning by asking them to discover and explore concepts and ideas on their own. Webquests are usually designed to be self-paced, with questions and exercises for students to complete at their own pace. They are often designed to help students develop skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration, and more.

Cell Transport WebQuest

Cell transport is the movement of substances within a cell or from one cell to another. It is essential for life because it allows nutrients to be distributed throughout the body and waste products to be removed. This process is carried out by proteins, which function as carriers called transporter proteins. In this webquest, students will learn about how cells move materials.

Cell transport is a difficult topic for students to understand. It is important to have students dive into learning this abstract topic through a variety of modalities. I am a huge proponent of visuals and hands-on, so that is exactly what we are going to have our students doing.

One way I teach cell transport will be highlighted here by the cell transport webquest, however, I wanted to note this is not the only resource I use to teach this topic.

Visuals and models can be used to clarify misconceptions in the cell transport webquest. Visuals are a great way to provide a more concrete explanation of what is happening in the body, whereas models allow students to interact with the information and gain a deeper understanding. The cell transport homework can be done in class or at home. So if you would like to have students practice on their own time, this would be a great activity for homework. A class discussion the next day would be a great way to uncover what they learned and if there are still misunderstandings.

By having students complete the cell transport webquest during class time, you could also catch any misunderstandings students may have in real-time. This is my favorite way because if a student has a question, I can immediately answer giving them quick feedback.

How Webquests Help Students

When you’re learning a new concept, it’s easy to get confused. Sometimes the words we use to talk about something don’t match up with the actual process. This is where models and visuals can really help. Webquests are a great way to help students understand the content. They can be used in a variety of ways, such as an introduction to a unit or lesson plan, as well as an assessment tool.

Webquests also allow students to develop important skills like creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving. In addition, they give students an opportunity to reflect on their learning by completing the webquest independently or with their peers.
