5 Tips to Effectively Implement the In-Class Flipping the Classroom Model

The flipping the classroom model has gained popularity in recent years as an effective way to engage students and improve learning outcomes. This model involves reversing the traditional classroom approach by having students watch video lectures or complete readings outside of class and using class time for discussion, group work, and problem-solving. In this blog post, I want to outline how we can use the flipped classroom model without requiring outside work from students. If this intrigues you, keep reading below.

Flipped Classroom vs. In Class Flip

One of the most common concerns I hear from teachers is that they would love to flip their classrooms, but their students would simply not do the work outside of class. I hear you loud and clear. I too have had the same concerns. And, I have done my research, implemented different forms of flipping so I have to say I feel that this one works the best. The IN-CLASS FLIP.

The in-class flip is essentially the same as a traditional class, however, we are incorporating more video lessons and readings for students to do. It is called the in-class flip because students are doing these assignments in-class rather than being expected to complete them out of class, which many would not do anyway.

Why the In-Class Flip Works

This flipping the classroom model works because all work is to be done in class while students are seated in front of you. You are still able to meander around the room assisting students, while holding them accountable for their learning assignments. The in-class flip takes away the students’ resistance because they just think it is part of what they are doing in your classroom. If you implement this strategy early in the school year, then they will not think of it as being different. The key is consistency.

Tips to Effectively Implement the In-Class Flip

ONE | Choose high-quality resources

The success of the flipped classroom model depends on the quality of the resources used. When selecting video lectures or readings, make sure they are engaging, informative, and relevant to the topic. We do not want to simply give students things to do, but we want them to invest in their learning. Carefully curating your content will ensure that you have the learning targets in mind.

TWO | Create a structured class plan

Before class, plan out how you will use the class time. Decide on the activities, group work, and discussions that will take place. Make sure the activities align with the learning objectives and the material covered in the video lectures or readings. This is essential because you will find that students will be working at their own pace. We want to have each minute of our class period spoken for so that there is no room for goofing off.

THREE | Encourage collaboration

Class activities should be designed to encourage collaboration and interaction among students. Have students form small groups and give them a specific task to complete. This will help to reinforce the concepts covered in the video lectures or readings and give students an opportunity to apply the knowledge they have learned.

FOUR |  Provide timely feedback

Feedback is an essential component of the flipped classroom model. Use class time to provide individual and group feedback to students. This will help them to understand the material better and make progress towards achieving the learning objectives. This is the beauty of the in-class flip because we have the flexibility to walk around assisting students with the content as soon as they run into misconceptions or questions.

FIVE | Evaluate and Adjust

As teachers, we are constantly evaluating ourselves. We should also evaluate the effectiveness of the flipped classroom model regularly. I encourage you to use student feedback and performance to make adjustments to the in-class flipped model. This will ensure that the flipped classroom model continues to meet the needs of the students and leads to improved learning outcomes…which is essentially what our goal is!
